I Chose The Field Of Student Affairs - 2207 Words

Author Robert Fritz once said, â€Å"Too many young people are being taught to give up their dreams before they have any experience attempting to pursue them.† I chose the field of Student Affairs because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of students, especially in a transformative time such as college. Through my undergraduate experience, I have seen former students become Resident Assistants, Orientation Leaders, Campus Justices, Emerging Leaders, Peer Leaders and more, where their influence will ripple to engage other future student leaders. Knowing that I am able to assist students in pursuing their dreams gives me confidence that they will give back to another avenue. My journey began in May of 2013 when Western Kentucky†¦show more content†¦At SACSA I present a poster session with my colleague, Ginny Durakovich. This poster session addressed the current issues of gender nonconforming students in a traditional college setting. Using Strange and Bannerâ⠂¬â„¢s Campus Ecology Theory, we identified key issues in the physical, aggregate, organizational, and constructed environments. Audience members were presented with possible solutions, and had the opportunity to share their experience in assisting students across the gender spectrum. The rationale for â€Å"Going Beyond the Binary† was to provide further support for students who do not fit into gender roles. These students often face difficulties in developing their gender and sexual identity due to the gender binary. This presentation prepared our peers, colleagues, and students to better assist all students in their development. I also had the opportunity to be in the case study with a randomly assigned partner. We did not place in the study, but we provided a solid foundation for our answer and I am confident if I was

Over the last fifty years the media has played a bigger part in the influence on the public by using ever evolving technology. How does the media have influence over the decisions of society? It is simple really, if you have the power to show the public what you want then you have a great influence on them. Malcom X said it well, â€Å"The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that s power. Just like Bill Gates the CEO of Microsoft company who used the transactional style of leadership where he used to visit teams that were working on the new projects and asked them hard and tough questions. When they answered his questions correctly, then he would be satisfied and will know that they are heading to the right direction towards achieving the set goals. Today, Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world, aided by the transactional leadership style. It institutes and regulates the practices that will make the organisation reach the maturity stage by putting emphasis on the goals, production of tasks and increase of efficiency. These type of leaders put their central concentration on improving the productivity of the already established procedures and customs and following the rules that exist than implementing changes to the organisation of the company. They use an exchange model where rewards are given for good performance and positive progress in followers (Hartley, 2010). In times of crisis and emergency, transactional leaders can execute punishment for any justified poor performance in employees or negative results until the crisis is brought under control. They manage each sector or tasks individually to make sure that it is completed (Benington, 2010). What they focus on contingent reward is given when the goals set are accomplished successfully, and contingent penalization is given when the performance quality is below the standards. With transactional leadership being more managerial in style, it acts as the foundation for the transformational leadership style that applies on the higher needs level rather than lower needs like transactional leadership. A transactional leader operatesby creating detailed structures that clarify what is anticipated of the followers and the recompenses they get for adhering to the rules and regulations; the punishment part is not usually stated out, but the followers are conscious of it and know that the formal systems of discipline exist. When a follower is allocated a specific task, they are fully responsible for everything, whether they are capable of performing it or not and whether the resources for executing it are available or not (Ivey, 2008). Transformational Leadership Style Transformational is a leadership style by which the organisational manager or the overall leader works with the juniors to ascertain any change that needs to be implemented, generate a vision to chaperon through inspiration and put forth change in line with dedicated team members. This type of leadership style serves the purpose of enhancing the confidence of followers together with their job performance and motivation to execute their various duties. Transformational leaders manage to do all the above by connecting the followers feeling of identity and sense of character to a mission and the shared distinctiveness of the company (Keel, 2007). Transformational leaders have the aspiration, resolution, and expertise to execute the necessary changes and recognise the basics of transformational leadership. With this, they will accomplish the degree of change needed in any dynamic environment and handle crisis critically. In their book, Leadership and Organizational Commitment: Transactional And Transformational Leadership Vs. Organizational Commitment Sabir, Anwar and Hameed said that the rarest resource in the world today is the leadership talent that can reform organisations recurrently to win in the world of the future generation. Sabir et.al. (2013). An organisation to be transformed faster and prepare it for a future success needs to have skilled transformational leaders. An organisations future depend on how many transformational leaders it has, it can be one or all of them. They will be very substantial in cases of any changes and crisis management. An example of a CEO who used the transformational leadership style and was successful throughout is Marissa Mayer, the CEO of Yahoo company. She joined the company of Google and was an employee before becoming the CEO of Yahoo. She had to make tough decisions that later on cost her but kept on pushing alongside her employees whom she inspired all the way. Despite the losses that Yahoo at one time incurred, her influence and charisma saw her through solving the crisis. The critics from the competitors did not have any impact on her goals for the company, the cooperative and loyal employees were with her all the way. Transformational leaders act as the role models of their followers for them to get inspired and raise their interest in ensuring the well-being of the organisation. The staff will respect a leader who possesses the qualities of a good leader, however, if the leader does not have the qualities, then he or she will not be considered as a role model by anyone. A transformational leader will challenge the followers to take considerable responsibility for their work and give it their devotion, he or she will know the strengths and weaknesses of followers and with this, will be able to assign the followers with tasks that boost their performance and fit their abilities and skills (Abuorabl, 2012). These leaders hold positive expectations for their followers and believe that each of the followers can do to their level best. Because of this, the followers getmotivated,endowed and inspired to surpass their normal levels of enactment cultivating them to become loyal and high performers. With their full loyalty and participation, even in times of crisis or change, it will be very easy to handle issues and bring back the order and therefore the continuation of an organisations development and success. According to the various studies carried out, it has become evident that transformational leadership styles are associatedwith progressive aftermaths in comparison to other styles of leadership including transactional leadership style (Bertocci, 2009). Charisma, one of the qualities a transformational leader gets from the ability to motivate and inspire followers, is a variable most powerfullyconnected to leader efficiency. Other works indicate that transformational leadership is relat edclearly with worker outcomes plusobligation, cooperation, clarity of task, and welfare (Coppola, 2011). A good example is that of Nelson Mandela who used the transformational leadership style during the time when he was working with other leaders to abolish apartheid in South Africa. His recurring emphasis for forgiveness contributed towards the eradication of racial separation in South Africa because of the influence he had on people, until today, he is the role model of so many people, old and young altogether because of his transformational leadership qualities. Transactional Leadership Style vs. Transformational Leadership Style In contradiction to transformational leadership, transactional leadership styles concentrate on the use of awards and penalties to achieve assent from followers. Transformational leaders look towards altering the future to motivate followers and achieve goals, while transactional leaders pursue to maintain the status quo, not aiming for progress. Studies have shown transformational leadership practices traverse to higher satisfaction with the leader among followers and better leader efficiency, while transactional applications result in higher follower job satisfaction and leader job performance (Shumate, 2011). Transformational leadership and transactional leadership are the two management styles that are usually associated the most. Scholars have distinguished the two styles and explained that transactional leader is leaders who exchange touchable rewards for the loyalty and work of followers. Transformational leaders are those who participate with followers, put emphasis on higher order key requirements, and rise awareness concerning the importance of explicit outcomes and new ways whereby those results might be attained (Keel, 2007). Transactional leaders tend to be more inactive as transformational managers establish active behaviours that comprise of providing a sense of duty. Transactional leadership is a powerful motivator whereby there are tangible rewards that have proven to be reliable motivation tool. Most followers or employees need a job to pay their bills and other requirements and would do things faster and effectively just to be rewarded, including implementing changes in times of crisis. Especially when short-term results are needed fast, like in crisis management, for instance providing extra payment for the sales persons to meet a surge in holiday demand or proposing a vacation time to a team of employees working on a project if they finish it by a specific deadline are operational styles to solving instantaneous financial and organisational problems (Zumitzavan, 2015). While the transformational style of leadership may yield more long-lasting results, it does not, however, giveprecisedirections as to who should accomplish what in which manner and how. On the other hand, with transactional style, there is almost no room for misinterpretations as each party knows exactly what their responsibilities are. It is a simple style and will cost low, and that is the reason it will be useful in implementing changes and managing a crisis in an organisation (Michie, 2015). Multicultural-Biography Essay Multicultural-Biography September 18,2013 Intro I am a Black, African-American male that has always been very precocious to the world. I was born in Detroit, Mi. located in the United States of America in a middle to upper middle class family in the year in 1983 which would make me 30 this November 16th. I can only speak English at the moment but Im learning Spanish. I dont really have a religious belief, Im more of a spiritual person but Ill talk more about that later. Race-Black Being of the Black skin tone has been a very unique experience I most say, compared to other skin tones of the world. I say this because many ethnic groups have my same skin tone and even darker but they all have different worldviews. As a black male that grew up in a large black populated city I can definitely attest to having a true Black race culture running deep in my character. There is a person on the other side of the world that looks exactly like me but lives by different creed, might not have any respect for me because of the country I come form and the way I may carry myself. The fact that if you put the to of us in the same room together many would pass us as brothers when really we never even seen each other before in our lives. Ethnicity- African American Africans became Americans is one that shows man-kind its worst. Many would say they prefer not to be referred as Africans since they know nothing of their ancestries from over 400 years ago. This truth about people of color not claiming there heritage is very unsettling to me because where you come from can help in determining your future, whether its 5 years ago or 5 hundred years ago. Its is very important for us not to let the past be erased because us remember who we are at times when we may forget in this crazy life we live. Our history was erased in the purpose so that we were nothing before we were called slaves even though there monuments in Africa and over parts of the globe that show proof that we were once a very special people. Yet in movies and even reenactments of the times of black kings and queens the actors are always white or fake Egyptian looking mulattoes. But there could be a change coming since more studies are showing that the first man was black when they found the oldest human bones in Africa. Hopefully change is coming but it may be noticeable until the generation that my great grandchildren live in. Exceptionality- Precocity I set precocious as number 3 because without this early adapted nature I am almost certain I might be here today. As a normal child experiencing what life throws at him, I noticed that I had a extra sense for detecting BS (if you will) in a situation or maybe Just with a particular person. Not to go to deep into this particular subject, this gift has guided me through good and bad time, in fact its when I ignore it is when uncontrollable things happen. I believe the greatest teacher is life itself, one just has to live long enough so they can show up and get taught something new. No one person is responsible for modeling the great mind on earth, that mind has to realized there something to learn around ever corner. Nobody can teach game the game is all around us to be seen by a watchful eye. Geography- Region: Detroit, Michigan Mid-West United States of America Location: Urban. Environment: Hood Growing up in Detroit is something I wouldnt for nothing in the world. Aside from the being the murder capital so many years, the experiences that I have learned growing up there cannot be compared to any other place on earth I feel. The biggest actor is that it is one of the only mostly black populate and mostly black run city in the America (not saying its done right) that was once thriving very well. Im not saying that I would have wanted to grow up in a big house in the suburbs but being raise with all types of strains of black people was very educating. At the moment my old neighborhood is at its worst. We never had a burned house on my block that didnt get fixed well 3-4 years ago it happened and that when you know your neighborhood is going down. I always saw illegal activity but it was mostly done in a certain manner ere if you didnt have an eye for it you would never notice. But with ever summer that passed the people got crazier; I noticed this when I turned 13. As soon as the as spring day would hit somebody would do something 10 times wilder, reckless, and deadlier then the last summer. Its like they were in competition with each other, but it really was Just a sign that things were getting worst. In the mist of all this was me pretty street smart because of it. Sex- Male Being a male growing up in Detroit, many would say I wasnt suppose to make it to see my twenty as many of my school never did, but I stand here blessed about to see 0 years of age. I am nothing but grateful for that because I personally know tooo many that could make it through 9th grade let alone through the twenties alive and not scorn too much by lifes trials and tribulations. I would never trade being the dominant of the sexes but as I am a wise man I know women rule the world. Detroit is a black city so thats the point of view I am most similar with, being that I have traveled a bit in my time I have much understanding of the views other males of different races and ethnicities. Class- Middle/Upper middle class I place myself in the middle to upper middle class because both my parents had uccessful business as I was growing up. My mother had a day care in our basement for 25years (until I was 15 years old), which had around 12 kids Monday- Friday. My Dad was an engineer for the board of education plus he did real estate amongst other things. I never experience lights going out or any bills not being paid in out house hold. We did go on trips in the summer but that was not the case for the rest of my surroundings. Some of my friends from back then still have never sit foot out side Detroit and dont plan on it even though the cities doing nothing but getting worst. Growing in this type of setting did make me grateful in most ways but at times it made me feel Just as poor as the other kids simply because they were my friend or that is who I saw every day, there problems were mine at times because of that. Funny thing is that this class is growing more and more in America. It makes me wonder whats to come of it, especially with a black president. Age-Young Adult To be a young adult it feels good and even better to be in college about to get a degree to make the family feel they did good and the bloodline shall thrive on. Sometimes its easy to forget how precious life is and how it can be taken away. At his time in my life I feel IVe so much and understand even more but there some much more the world has to offer me. At 30 1 understand the mistakes the late teens and twenty something year old people make and I can laugh to myself and say I did that one time or sometime because I believe I have always been a little ahead of my time I say I would have never did nothing like that. I guess being a young adult all I can do is feel blessed and know there is a reason for my existence. What that is Guess I have to keep on living to find out. Language- English At the moment I speak English but I have been in multiple French class in lementary school that I have forgotten and I am currently in a Spanish 2 class even though I dont remember what I learned in Spanish-I two to three semester ago. I know learning it will help me when I move to California next summer but I can never impacted me negatively in anyway but I know moving to California where Latinos dominant, Spanish will be more then need if I want to be able to do business with everybody. And thats exactly what I want. Religion- Other As a child I sometime went to Baptist and Methodist churches but I dont remember Joining. In fact when I became of age the only time I went to church was hen mu grandmother wanted me to go and there is no saying NO to grandma. I am a full believer in God but all the story that he never wrote himself is were my eyebrow raises. In my family and community I have seen some of the most upheld people of the church do some non-church like things but this is were I am suppose to get guidance from. The very first naw was put together because of a holy war hundreds of years ago. I am Just not sold. I believe life is what you make it, as long as you mind your business and do good to others everything will be alright. This doesnt ean sit around and say you waiting on God to send you a blessing. Life is a blessing enough in its own. I feel the spirit people talk about but in a different way. Its always kind and never Judging and it pushes and pulls us to where we need to be at any given moment in our lives. When I geta chance to tell a kid 12-18 years old something I keep it direct and raw. Just as it was passed to me through the years. Sugar coating truth of life is the worst thing we can to do when passing on our knowledge because life is not sugar coated like in the movies. This is the perception most people have in one way or another and t is hurt them a little bit more as time goes on. Among other things, motifs add depth to your writing and steer readers toward your book’s central message (assisted by other strong literary devices).In this post, we’ll look at what a motif is (and what it is not), examine motif examples in action, and explore how you can incorporate motifs into your own writing.What is a motif?A motif is a recurring narrative element with symbolic significance. If you spot a symbol, concept, or plot structure that surfaces repeatedly in the text, you’re probably dealing with a motif.
